Gywen "Yvonne" Best Sanders, age 87, a phenomenal woman, a loving wife, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, made her transition from earth to glory on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
Yvonne was born in Brackettville, Texas on March 4, 1937, to Geneva Golden Williams. She was raised in Del Rio, Texas where she attended Carver School. In 1955, she married her first husband, the late Judge Leon "Spanky" Best, and they shared 37 wonderful years together. They had four children, Leon, Zaundra, Jeannine, and Willie Dee. Yvonne loved her children dearly and loved to share their accomplishments with everyone she encountered. In 1998, she married her second husband, Bennie Sanders, Jr., and they shared 26 happy years of marriage. Her life was filled with love and happiness.
Yvonne was employed for 25 years by Texas State Health Women's Programs where she assisted physicians and nurse practitioners in exam rooms, taught patients health care, and did community outreach. In 1973, Yvonne was selected as one of Del Rio's Mothers of the Year. In 1977, she was Woman of the Year at the International Women's Day Conference. Yvonne was an active member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she was a deaconess, announcing clerk, member of the Hospitality Committee, and Vice President of the Usher Board. Yvonne was also a member of the advisory board for the Boys and Girls Club.
To know Yvonne was to love her. God blessed her with a unique ability to make everyone she met feel like family. The impact on the people in her life will live on forever. In her passing, Yvonne leaves so many memorable moments of fun and laughter, and an abundance of love for her family.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Judge Leon "Spanky" Best, and their son, Willie Dee Best. She is survived by her second husband, Bennie Sanders, Jr., son, Leon Carl Best (Debra), daughters, Zaundra Yvonne Wyatt (Stanley) and Jeannine Opoku (Kofi), bonus son, Bennie Sanders, III, and bonus daughter, Jihan Mechae, brother-in-law, Elmo (Rusty) Watson (Sylvia), sister Nancy Williams, three nephews, Rodney Hopkins (Crystal), Derek Hopkins, and Calvin Delaney, Jr., one niece, Tamika McCaskill, grandchildren Leon Carl Best, Jr. (Melanie), Demarcus Best (Joy), Christian Best (Alexis), Stanley Wyatt, III, LaShay Yvonne McQueen (Jeremy), Tony Safo (Ann), and KP Yaw Poku (Wisteria), eighteen great grandchildren, a host of cousins, family, friends, and lastly, Nike Baby, her beloved pet dog.
The visitation will be held on Friday, November 22 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM; special remarks from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
A chapel service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
The interment will follow at Seminole Indian Scout Cemetery.
