Obituary

Teofilo G. Hernandez, age 87, entered into rest on Monday, October 24, 2022 in Del Rio, Texas.

Teofilo Hernandez was a man of God and great honor. Born on September 6, 1935, he was a sibling to six others and the son of Silverio and Herlinda Hernandez. Teofilo was preceded in death by his parents Silverio and Herlinda Hernandez; his siblings, Ricardo, Olivia, Silverio, Josefina and Raul; as well as his in-laws, Miguel and Agapita Varela and son-in-law Rodolfo "Rudy" Ibañez. Left to share in his memory is his youngest sister Irma Proctor (Terry Proctor).

Teofilo came to the United States in 1951 and began developing many skills through numerous jobs; his favorite being that of a ranch hand on a ranch in Val Verde County. Teofilo traveled to California, Illinois, Wisconsin and many other states to make ends meet before settling down in Del Rio with his beautiful wife Estefana. They officially married on January 7, 1961, and had their first child Beatriz a year later. After Beatriz came seven other children, in order: Ramiro, Rosalinda (Charlie), Raul (Patty), Rogelio, Melva, Elva (Roland) and Raquel. After each child's birth, Teofilo took time off to raise his child and nurture his wife before going back to work. For more than 20 years, Teofilo supported his family by working as a cutter at Hicks-Ponder, a local clothing manufacturing company. This says a lot about his commitment to his family, knowing that every child of his described him as the hardest working man they knew. He was also described as strict, tough and impatient at times but never without reason. He knew the value of his family and held them to high standards; he never wanted to see his children fall short of their potential. All this to say, his children are grateful for who he was and how well he took care of them. He was proud to be their father.

Aside from being a father, husband and grandfather, Teofilo was a man of God. He had a passion for music, whether he was at his computer or mowing the lawn, Teofilo always listened to music and made sure the entire house joined in. His joy for music not only impacted his family but it brought joy to the entire neighborhood. Not a Saturday morning went by without the speakers being blasted with vibrant music. From wearing his headphones to listening to cumbias at Quinceañeras, Teofilo always took the opportunity to dance; he passed this creativity and passion on to the next generation of Hernandez's. This generation includes sixteen grandchildren, from oldest to youngest: Ramiro Hernandez Jr., Stephanie Hernandez Lawrence (Sean), Alyssa Ibanez (Carlos), Erica Jimenez, Javier Ibanez (Jaclyn), Michael Hernandez, Crystal Hernandez (Radney), Rodolfo (Rudy) Ibanez III (Natalie), Briana Jimenez, Cheyenne Hernandez, Cristina Hernandez, Claudia Huffman, Montana Hernandez, Carla Huffman, Emillie Hernandez, and Silverio Hernandez. As well as four great grandchildren: Aaliyah Ibanez, Abriella Ibanez, Ryleigh Ibarra, and Dominik Ibarra.

Teofilo rests now with his best friends, Hunter, Bandit and Max.
