Simona Duran Smith, 79, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, surrounded by loving family in the comfort of her own home in Del Rio, TX. She was born on February 18, 1940 in Zacatecas, Mexico to Ramon Duran and Concepcion Lozano de Duran. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years, James Arthur Smith of Del Rio, TX; and her brother Antonio Duran of Cleburne, TX. Simona selflessly gave her life, love and talent to all of her 10 children and their families. There was nothing that she wouldn't do for anyone she loved. Her love was limitless. She enjoyed sharing her love, laughter, talent and a lifetime of wisdom with her beloved family and friends. Her greatest talent was cooking various types of Mexican food from original recipes. She developed that talent at the young age of 7, when she taught herself how to make tortillas to help feed her family, while growing up in Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico. Everyone who tasted her food – from Texas to Montana, Florida and as far away as Japan – boasts it is the best they ever tasted. She lived a life of faith, always telling her children to trust in the Lord's love, guidance and protection, which helped her stay strong – besides the love of her family – through the last 8 months of recovery from heart surgery. Her bravery, grace and strength throughout her arduous journey is but one testimony of the character and faith she leaves behind as a legacy to her family. Besides her family, she had a special way of making everyone feel welcome in her home, which she filled with love and laughter, and surrounded with her of love of plants. She also had a passion for bingo and shopping but nothing surpassed her love for God and family. She is survived by her children, Efrain and his wife Romelia of San Antonio, Tx.; Cristina Duran and her husband Alberto of Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico; James Smith Jr. and his wife Tammy of Montana, Rosemary Smith of College Station, TX; Clara Smith-Boots of Odessa, TX; Bryan Smith and his wife Jennifer of Castroville, TX; Jack Smith of Austin, TX; Mary Hagland and her husband Paul of Odessa, TX; Lee Smith of Spring, TX; and Josie Lyttle and her husband Michael of Austin, TX; as well as 25 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory her brothers and sisters, Jose Refugio and wife Antonia of Fort Worth; Ramon Duran and his wife and his wife Rosalinda of Fort Worth; Feliciano Duran and his wife Mercedez; Marta Duran and her husband Rogelio of Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico; and sister-in-law, Cristina, wife of the late Antonio Duran of Cleburne, TX. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. Chapel Service will held on Friday, April 19, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
