Rudy T. Hernandez

December 15, 1954 – February 18, 2026

Rudy T. Hernandez, 71, of New Braunfels, Texas, passed away on February 18, 2026, after a courageous battle with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Born in Slaton, Texas, Rudy was raised by his brother Jesse T. Hernandez and sister-in-law Hortense, whose guidance greatly influenced the man he would become.

In 1973, Rudy answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. Over a distinguished 20-year career, he served as a tanker and later as a Survey/Construction Engineer, traveling throughout the world and earning numerous awards and decorations. He retired honorably on August 1, 1993 as a Sergeant First Class, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, discipline, and service.

After his military retirement, Rudy continued serving his community through his work with the City of Grand Prairie and the City of Arlington in the WasteWater Division. He retired in 2015 after another 20 years of faithful service.

Above all, Rudy was a family man. He was a devoted husband to Cordy Hernandez for 50 years, a loving father to Monica Tyner and her husband Corey, and a proud grandfather to Brett, Kayla, Brandon, Tristan, and Blake. His heart overflowed for his great-grandchildren — Kaden, Lyla, Amelia, Aneia, Aiyla, Amara, Zachariah, and Payson. He is also survived by his brothers Jesse, Tony, Arnold (Carol), and Danny; his sister Mary Ramirez (Larry); and many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Vanessa Hernandez; his parents Paula and Yidefonso Hernandez; his brothers Esziquel (Chico), Elijo (Panchito), Raymond, Joe, and Charlie; and his sister Judy Reyes.

Rudy loved deeply and lived fully. He found peace outdoors, especially on river and casino trips surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed laughter, good company, and of course, a nice cold beverage. His strength, loyalty, and steady presence will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

His legacy of service and love will continue through the generations he helped build.

There will be a visitation on Monday, March 2, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a rosary at 7:00 pm, at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home at 415 S. Business IH-35, New Braunfels, Texas 78130. A short viewing will take place on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, at Sunset Memorial Oaks, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 12:30 pm. at Holy Family Catholic Church, at 245 S. Hidalgo Ave., New Braunfels, Texas 78130. Following mass, there will be a procession to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, for a committal service with full military honors, at 2:15 pm.
