Raquel Gonzalez Hernandez passed away peacefully January 24, 2026 in Austin,Texas at the age of 97. She was born December 4th, 1928 in Colorado City, Texas to Marcelino and Emilia Reyes Gonzalez.
Raquel was preceded in death by her parents Marcelino and Emilia, her husband Nestor, her son David and her sister, Maria de los Angeles. As a young lady, Raquel worked at Mrs. Crosby's in Cuidad Acuna in the curiosity shop. Later she worked at S. H. Kress and Co. five-and-dime chain here in Del Rio. She met her future husband Nestor in 1955 while working at Kress and they were married in March of 1956. They raised four children together and celebrated over 50 years of marriage.
Raquel attended business classes in the evenings, earned a CPA license, and worked at several department stores, all while raising her family. Raquel began her teaching career in 1970 at Garfield Elementary. She was later hired as an assistant Reading Teacher at the 7th and 8th grade campus Reading Lab. With drive and determination, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Sul Ross State University in the summer of 86'. She became certified as a primary bi-lingual teacher and taught at Lamar for ten years. She retired after 26 years with the SFDR CISD.
Raquel was a devout Baptist and was a Sunday school teacher for many years at First Baptist Church. She also volunteered as a teacher for many seasons of Vacation Bible School at First Baptist. She was most proud of her children, all having acquired college degrees and 3 of her children following in her footsteps, becoming educators as well.
The visitation will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral home, 2020 N. Bedell Ave, Del Rio, Texas.
The visitation will continue on Monday, February 2, 2026 from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM with a chapel service at 11:00 AM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral home, 2020 N. Bedell Ave, Del Rio, Texas.
The interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 5144 Hwy 90 East, Del Rio, Texas.
