Maria A. Maldonado, affectionately known as Tonie, passed away in Del Rio, Texas, on July 31, 2025, at the age of 88. She was born on October 20, 1936, to the late Leonardo and Francisca Cardenas. Tonie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gerardo J. Maldonado. She leaves behind her only son, Rick Maldonado (Yvonne), grandchildren Aaron and Anissa (Aaron), and great-grandson Easton, who will hold her memory in their hearts forever.
Tonie is also survived by her siblings: Raul Cardenas of Arizona, Maria de la Paz Rader (James) of San Antonio, Rodolfo Cardenas of Del Rio, and sister-in-law Adriana Foster of Laredo, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved her deeply.
After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, Tonie attended the University of the Incarnate Word, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree. Her thirst for knowledge led her to continue her education, earning a Master's Degree from Sul Ross State University.
For 35 plus years, Tonie dedicated her life to San Felipe Del Rio CISD, serving as both a teacher and an educational diagnostician. Through her tireless work, she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues, leaving behind a lasting legacy in education.
Tonie was known for her love and words of wisdom that she shared with everyone around her. Her family and friends will forever cherish the memories of her kindness, advice, and devotion to making the world a better place.
The family would like to thank the Southwest Assisted Living for the many years of their love, care and support.
Tonie's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed, but her impact will never be forgotten. May she rest in peace.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025 from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM; recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30 at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 2020 N. Bedell Ave, Del Rio, Texas.
The Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 307 E. Losoya St, Del Rio, Texas.
The interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, end of 2nd St, Del Rio, Texas.
