Obituary

Julia Ann Hedges Beavan passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019 in Waco, TX after a brief illness. Julia was a woman of grace, courage, artistry, and love. Although she left us too soon, her family and friends are left with beautiful memories of joy and laughter to cherish forever. Julia was born to Dr. Homer V. Hedges and Emma Dee Hall Hedges on April 10, 1939 in Stephenville, Texas. She was raised in Hico, Texas, graduating a year early as Salutatorian of the Hico High School class of 1956. Julia then attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, graduating in 1960 with a degree in English. While at TCU, Julia was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, serving as President of the Rho Epsilon chapter during her senior year. After college, Julia started her career in San Antonio as a buyer for Joskes Department Store. She met James Goodwin Beavan on a blind date in 1961. They married six months later on February 24, 1962 and began their life together on the Beavan family ranch in Northern Mexico. Julia immersed herself in her new environment, learning the language and discovering a love for the art and culture of Mexico that lasted throughout her lifetime. When not on the ranch, frequent trips to Del Rio introduced Julia to friends she would treasure and activities she would enjoy for years to come. In 1964, James and Julia welcomed their first child, daughter, Rachel Andrea. And, in 1967, their son, Trevor Goodwin completed their family. Julia was an active member of the Del Rio community. While her children were young, she served as leader of the St. James Girl Scout troop, Sunday School teacher and chairman of the St. James Bazaar annual school fundraiser. She was a founding member of the Del Rio Council for the Arts. She also enjoyed her long membership in Pan American Round Table, Cactus Thorn Garden Club, and Fine Arts Club. An avid reader, she belonged to the Val Verde County Library Book Club and the San Antonio Chi Omega Alumni Book Club. She was also a member of the Spanish Club in San Antonio. Julia's favorite pastimes included painting and creating art projects with her grandchildren, knitting, playing bridge, gardening, baking, and traveling. In addition to her warmth, humor, and wonderful stories, her apple pie will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Homer V. Hedges and Emma Dee Hall Hedges and her husband of 45 years, James Goodwin Beavan. Julia is survived by brother Alan C. Hedges of Hico, TX; daughter Rachel Andrea and husband Ramon Mendez of Del Rio, TX; son Trevor Goodwin and wife Maritza Beavan of Del Rio, TX and Coahuila, MX; grandchildren James Alan Mendez, Maria Andrea Beavan, Sebastian Goodwin Beavan, and Paloma Beavan.
