John Wiley McDowell, age 77, passed away on January 6, 2026. He was born on September 7, 1948, in Columbia, South Carolina.

John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 12 years and was a veteran who carried his sense of duty and integrity throughout his life. In 2002, he received a heart transplant, a life-changing gift that allowed him many more meaningful years with his family. In keeping with his generous spirit, John chose to donate his body to science.

In 1972, John married the love of his life, Marie Elaine McDowell. They shared 53 years of marriage, building a life rooted in devotion, resilience, and family. John enjoyed working with his hands and found great satisfaction in woodworking. He also loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, pursuits that reflected his patience, skill, and appreciation for nature.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Elaine McDowell; his children Kevin McDowell and wife Ana McDowell, and Josh McDowell and wife Vicky McDowell; grandchildren, Josh and Katie; and his brothers, Paul and Charles. John will be remembered for his strength, generosity, quiet determination, and deep love for his family.
