John David Martinez, age 64, entered into rest on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Del Rio, Texas. He was born on February 13, 1962, in Del Rio, Texas.

John was a kind, generous, and deeply caring man whose love for his family was the center of his life. He was the kind of person who could not simply walk past someone in need. If someone needed food, water, clothing, or a helping hand, John gave freely and without hesitation. His generosity came naturally, and he never sought recognition for doing what he believed was right.

For 44 years, John shared his life with his beloved wife, Maricela Martinez. His love and devotion to Maricela were evident in the many ways he cared for her throughout their marriage. When she needed him, John was there--cooking for her, caring for her, accompanying her to dialysis appointments, and doing whatever he could to ensure her comfort and care. He took good care of his wife, not simply out of responsibility, but out of love.

John loved and adored his children and was immensely proud of his family. His grandchildren were among the absolute joys of his life. He treasured spending time with them and simply being in their presence. John's love for his grandchildren was immeasurable, and the happiness they brought into his life was evident whenever he was with them.

John also had an incredible sense of humor; he loved to joke and make people laugh. His family could always count on him for a joke, a funny story, or something unexpected that would make everyone laugh. That humor was simply part of who John was, and the laughter and joy he brought into their lives will remain among his family's most treasured memories.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army. He enjoyed fishing and had a special fondness for horses and ranch life. John especially enjoyed working with horses and the hands-on work of being a ranch hand.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Maricela Martinez; his children, John David Martinez Jr., Melissa Yvette Martinez (Gregorio Martinez), Allysa Martinez, and Michael Sky Martinez; and his beloved grandchildren, Emma Martinez, Lorena Martinez, Eli Martinez, and Sebastian Martinez.

He is also survived by his mother, Aleticia A. Martinez; his four brothers, Oscar Martinez Jr. (Josie Martinez), Joseph Robert Martinez (Gabrielle Martinez), Jerry Lee Martinez (Yvette Martinez), and Tony A. Martinez; and his five sisters, Frances Auberg (Bob Auberg), Georgina Sotelo (Gilbert Sotelo), Norma J. Sampson (David Sampson), Rebecca J. Jenkins (Al Jenkins), and Patty Marie Martinez (Ray Ojeda).

John is also survived by his mother-in-law, Paula Venegas; his sister-in-law, Monica Faz (Jerry Faz); and his brothers-in-law, Eddie Venegas and David Venegas.

He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

John was preceded in death by his father, Oscar B. Martinez; his sister, Maria Leticia Martinez; and his grandparents, Francisca B. Lozano and Gilberto 'Papa Beto' Lozano, and grandparents, Juan H. Almeida; and Emilia R. Gonzales.

John's family will remember him for far more than the years he lived. They will remember his generous heart, the laughter he brought into their lives, the pride he took in his family, and the love he gave so freely. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A chapel service is scheduled on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 2020 N. Bedell Ave, Del Rio, TX.

A procession will follow the chapel service to Westlawn Cemetery, end of West 2nd St., Del Rio, TX.
