James (Jim) Walker was born to Elbridge and Letha Ruth (Padfield) Walker on March 10, 1951 in Kingman, Kansas. He earned his BSEE from Wichita State University in 1974. He pursued a career in computer software and operating systems engineering in various companies, including Tectronix and Dell Computer and also once held a faculty position at the Laser Lab at the University of Rochester.

He made his home in New Braunfels, Texas.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Stephen Walker. He is survived by his sons, Jason (Lidia), Aaron (Lorelei), and Ryan (Lucie), his grandchildren, Carigan Walker, Reese Walker, and Adeline Walker, his sister, Julie (Charles) Walker, and nephew Zachary.
