Lt. James Lee Sunderland, Sr. February 2, 1960 June 30, 2006 Lt. James Lee Sunderland, Sr., age 46, entered into rest June 30, 2006 in the line of duty. He was born February 2, 1960 in Edinburg, Texas. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1978. He worked as farm machinery mechanic for Amigo Implement for 10 years before going through Hidalgo County Peace Officers academy. He moved to Del Rio in 1988 as a temporary Deputy, one year later became permanent Deputy. He continued college one class at a time and recently obtained a Master Peace Officer Certificate. He loved God first then family than job and community. He believed that family came first before job or anything else. He also believed the officers need to show compassion and caring towards everyone he came into contact with. His hobbies were family times together, building and racing cars. He loved farming and anything to do with working with his hands, he was not afraid to step in and help out his fellow man in time of need. Always made time for his men, regardless of how busy he was. He never hesitated to drop what he was doing to simply sit and listen. Believed that a true leader showed a strong compassion care for his/her comrades and treated them with respect at all times, treated them and their families as if they were part of his own family. He was a simple man with simple pleasures like building car ramps with his sons, bringing home redneck Roses (wild flowers) to me instead of store bought flowers, wear new under clothes and new socks at the same time. He would have plain biscuits dipped in syrup in the morning after church. He was a strong caring peace officer to others, but wanted to be known as a simple man like anyone else. He loved his church and worshipped every Sabbath at church, and everyday and night with the family. He had is own special wave for the children that he worked so hard to protect and gather toys for at Christmas. Always had numerous chairs in his office so his guys could stop in and talk to him whenever they need someone to listen. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Juanell Lynn Sunderland, children, James Lee Sunderland, Jr., Jeremy Lynn Sunderland, Jennifer Lynn Sunderland, Jessica Lorraine Sunderland, parents, Carl G. and Emma Sunderland, brothers, Carl G. Sunderland, III, Randall Lee Sunderland, sister, Judy Ann Altemeyer, also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and host of friends. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 6, 2006 from 5:00pm "� 9:00pm at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel of Remembrance. Chapel service will be held Friday, July 7, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel of Remembrance. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
