Dora F. Barrera, age 87, entered into rest October 5, 2010 in Del Rio, Texas. She was born August 18, 1923 in Del Rio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Eddie Barrera and daughter Edna Barrera. Dora F. Barrera was the eldest of 3 children born to Francisco and Maria Eufemia Flores of Del Rio , Texas . As a child she was an avid reader and very focused on her studies. Shortly after graduating from then San Felipe High School in 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, Eddie Barrera, with whom she had four children. After World War II, Dora moved with her husband and family to Santa Clara , California where they made their home for the next eight years. In 1954, pulling up stakes again, the family moved back to Del Rio , Texas . It was then that Dora began pursuing a career in teaching. Enrolling at then Sul Ross State Teachers"� College in Alpine, Texas , Dora received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a minor in History. She then began a lifelong career of teaching beginning with 1st grade in the San Felipe Independent School District. In the ensuing years Dora continued her education and received a Masters Degree in Education from Sul Ross. She also had certifications in Reading and Bi-lingual Education. Her career began teaching 1st grade, but she also taught pre-kinder, Head- Start, and 3rd grade in the 30 years she taught in Del Rio schools. In 1988 she retired to care for her ailing husband who was bed-ridden. Upon her husband"�s demise in 1988, Dora was later sought out and was subsequently hired as supervisor of the Head Start Program, a program in early education of which she was quite fond. Dora loved teaching with a passion. It was her life. She will be sorely missed by family, friends, and colleagues. Left to cherish her memory is her son Ed Barrera and wife Yolanda Barrera of Del Rio, Tx., daughters Hope B. Holloman of Eagle Pass, Tx., Eve Barrera of Del Rio, Texas Grandchildren: David Michael Holloman of Chantilly, Va., Bryan Joseph Barrera of San Antonio, Tx., Jonathan Caleb Barrera of Del Rio, Texas. Great-Grandchildren: Lucas Barrera and Caleb Haze Barrera. Left with the honors of Pallbearers: Jonathan Caleb Barrera, David Michael Holloman, Felix Eloy Barrera, Lavel Barrera, Frank Flores and Bryan Joseph Barrera. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 5:00PM -9:00PM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, Chapel of Remembrance. Prayer Service 7:00PM.
