Clara McCord Eckenroth, 91, beloved daughter of Cash Asher and Flossie Winne peacefully passed away on Friday, April 20, 2018 in Blue Skies of Texas (Air Force Village) in San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Bruce and sisters Velberta Towner and Arlene Karson. Clara was born in Detroit, MI on March 14, 1927, and at the age of 12 moved to Davenport, Iowa where she later met Allen Rue McCord. They were married in 1946 and shortly thereafter they moved to Corpus Christi where their 4 children were born and raised. Clara is survived by her and Allen's 4 children; Kathleen Rue Bader (James), Kelly Sue Grawunder, (fiance' Lance Myers), Connie Lee McCord, and Robert Allen McCord; Grandchildren Amy Elaine Bader (Matt Yoder), Jamie Rue Bader (Chad Brethauer), Gilbert Allen Grawunder (Kelly), Gregory Lee Grawunder (Jodi) and Jenna Marie McCord. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren; Nathaniel James and Nicholas Root Yoder, Riley Asher Grawunder, Haley Faith and Hunter McKinley Grawunder, and Cash James Brethauer. Included in her extended family, Clara is also survived by 8 nieces and nephews, 18 great nieces and nephews, 18 great-great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Clara had many interests, her favorite being the biggest supporter of Allen's athletic career at the University of Iowa, then later as a coach/teacher in the Corpus Christi School district. Clara loved those years of comradery with the other coaches and their families and formed lifelong friendships and bonds. Along with being a Coach's wife, she was Director of David Wicks Memorial School and later Director of the Corpus Christi YWCA where she was instrumental in raising funds to build the new location on South Padre Island Drive. In 1968 Clara began the Early Christian Awareness Program (a teaching curriculum for 6 to 36 month old babies) resulting in thousands of children around the world having a foundation of Christian teaching because of her deep love for our Lord and His children. She was incredibly indebted to Sandy Shepard for her support in continuing the program after her retirement. Allen retired as Head Coach from W. B. Ray High School in 1987, Clara following in 1990 and in 1992 they sold their family house in Corpus Christi and moved to Brackettville, TX where they were able to continue their love of singing, dancing, swimming, and golfing. Allen passed away in 2002 and she later married Frank E. Eckenroth, a much loved man and in 2005 they moved to Blue Skies of Texas (Air Force Village) in San Antonio where he passed away in February of 2015. Clara's family is greatly indebted to Linda (Eckenroth) Patton and the staff at the Blue Skies of Texas West for their love and care of both their Mother and Frank. Her Celebration of Life and burial will be on Saturday, April 28 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Brackettville, TX. Visitation will be at 10:00 with graveside burial and reception to follow.
