Charles Perry Bruce, 90, of Del Rio, TX, passed away peacefully at home on October 16, 2026 with loved ones by his side.

Charles was born in Menard, TX on March 24, 1936 and has lived in Del Rio since childhood. A renowned athlete in his early years, he attended Victoria Junior College on a track scholarship. He went on to join the Del Rio police force in 1958, and became the city’s Chief of Police in 1984. He served his community for 42 years, retiring in 2000.

“Papa,” as he was lovingly called by his family, was known for his strength, unwavering determination, and quiet confidence. A brave and steadfast man, he was a natural protector, both in his decades of service to the citizens of Del Rio and in the life he built for his family. As a police officer and, ultimately, Chief of Police, he dedicated more than four decades to serving and protecting his community, leading with conviction and leaving a lasting legacy of leadership, commitment, and integrity. At home, he was the rock of the family—the one everyone could count on, the one who took care of everyone, and the one who could always find a way to make things happen. His presence brought a sense of security and reassurance, and his strength was matched by a deep devotion to those he loved.

Beyond his service and family, Charles had a love for travel and reading, always eager to explore new places and discover something new. He lived life with purpose, courage, and confidence, and his legacy will live on in the family he cherished, the community he served, and all those whose lives were made better by having known him. To put it simply, Charles was a great man.He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Mary Kay Bruce; their children, Bobby Bruce, Tammy Martin, and Mark Bruce; their grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his sisters, Patsy Bales, Sue Wolfe, and Betty Nichols.

A memorial service in honor of Charles will be held on November 14, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home in Del Rio, TX.
