Barbara Jean Walston-Lyon, better known as Jean, passed away peacefully at her home on July 9, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Floresville, Texas on April 4,1944 (4-4-44), to parents Lois and Doyle Walston, Jean spent most of her childhood in Sutherland Springs before moving to San Antonio. After graduating from Highlands High School, she married John Lyon and they raised four children together in both San Antonio and LaVernia. The couple had been married for 52 years and were looking forward to celebrating their 53rd anniversary in November of 2024.Jean had a long career at Kelly AFB, starting as a clerk and working her way up to supervisory positions in the Security Service branch. After retiring from Kelly in 1991, Jean not only learned how to make candles, she mastered the process. She opened her first retail location, a kiosk in Rolling Oaks Mall in San Antonio, Texas in spring of 1991. Before the Christmas season 1991 she opened her first retail store in the same mall. Not long after that, she held her grand opening of her first stand alone candle shop in LaVernia, Texas. She would eventually open two candle shops in LaVernia and her final location in Gruene, Texas in June of 1994. Many people enjoyed her beautiful carved and beautifully scented candle creations and were loyal customers.After closing her shop, Jean stayed active by working at Schlitterbahn with John during the summers. They had already settled into their home on a hill in Canyon Lake, TX. Together, they loved going on cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Hawaii. Jean cherished her family, favorite sports teams, (Astros, Cowboys) cats, and the beautiful countryside, especially the bluebonnets. Known for her skill in jigsaw puzzles and ping pong, Jean was always up for a challenge.Jean's family was a big part of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jo Ann Foerster. She is survived by her husband John R. Lyon Sr. and children Debbie Lyon-Gibson (Maurice) of Tampa, FL, Patti Lyon-Skrzycki of Irving, Kristi Lyon of Irving, and John Lyon, Jr. (Alana) of Denver, CO. She loved her 7 grandchildren, who range in age from 5 to 37. In addition to her immediate family, Jean also had several nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as former co-workers and friends who will continue to remember her fondly and hold her in their hearts..The visitation for Jean will take place at Sunset Memorial Oaks in New Braunfels, located at 415 S. Business 35, starting at 10:00 a.m., on July 17,2024. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., Jean will then be laid to rest at Sutherland Springs Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on the same day.
