Antonio E. Gutierrez January 17, 1923 July 23, 2012 Antonio E. Gutierrez (Tony), local educator and historian, 89 died peacefully at home on Monday, July 23, 2012. He was born to the late Alfredo and Alberta Gutierrez, January 17, 1923, in Del Rio, TX. Tony graduated from his beloved San Felipe High School in 1942 and received a BA and MA from Southwest Texas State Teachers College. He married Carmela Herrera in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1943 through January 1946. He was stationed in Italy. Tony learned how to sing Italian songs and he sang them throughout his lifetime. He especially enjoyed singing them to his kids and nephews. Tony worked as a school administrator for over 30 years. He served as Asst. Supt. of the San Felipe Independent School District for numerous years until consolidation. He was passionate about making a difference in the lives of his students. After consolidation, he served of principal of SFDRCISD. He also taught of Sul Ross State University of over 10 years, teaching students obtaining their MA in education. Tony was a noted historian. He once wrote that �"the past is our guide, for we cannot move forward without looking backward"�. He devoted much of his time to gathering, compiling and recording data to document the �"humble, but colorful history of our beloved community of San Felipe"�. These articles were often published in the local newspaper. He donated his numerous articles to the Whitehead Memorial Museum. Tony if survived by his wife, Carmela Gutierrez. He is also survived by one son and two daughters: Oscar Hugo Gutierrez and wife Cecilia, Ida Gladys Gutierrez of Del Rio, and Ella Urby and husband David of Mansfield, TX. He is survived by a sister, Sofia Cardenas and her children: Ruben G. Cardenas, Cecilia Reyes and Alicia Alberta Cardenas, whom he considered as his own. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Miguel, Adriana, Mark, Oscar Hugo, Kristina, A.E. (Tony), Ruben Dean, Kimberly, D.J. and Kristen and 7 great grandchildren. Also surviving his are numerous nieces and nephews. Tony was preceded in death by his brothers: Cecilio Gutierrez, Ruben Gutierrez and Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family if requesting that donation be made to the Whitehead Memorial Museum 1308 South Main Street Del Rio, Texas. Gentlemen with the honor of Pallbearers: Ruben Gutierrez, Ruben Cardenas, D.J. Urby, Miguel Gutierrez, J.R. Gutierrez, Ruben Dean Nino and Robert Kiniskey. Honorary Pallbearers: Homero Sigala, Rudy Urby, Gene Vasquez, Nolo Gonzalez, Mario Zertuche, Lupe De Hoyos, Alfredo Mireles and Ruben Nino. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2012 from 5:00pm-9:00pm at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, Chapel of Remembrance, Recitation of the Holy Rosary At 7:00pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 10:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment to follow at San Felipe Cemetery.
