Alva Archer Sawtelle, a beloved husband, father, brother, and cherished member of the Del Rio, Texas community, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on September 8, 1936, in Newfane, Vermont.

Alva graduated from Chester High School in 1954 and in 1955, enlisted in the United States Air Force. His military career spanned 26 years, during which he served his country with honor and distinction. It was in Del Rio, Texas, in 1956, that Alva met the love of his life, Barbara, whom he married in 1958. After retiring from the Air Force in 1981, Alva returned to Del Rio with his wife and family which is where they met in 1956. He then went to work for the U.S. Border Patrol in Administrative Support in 1983 and continued until his second retirement in 2002.

Alva's commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. In retirement, he became a dedicated supporter of various charities, focusing on causes that mattered deeply to him, including veterans, children, diabetes research, and animal welfare. His contributions were a testament to his generous nature and desire to make the world a better place.

Known for his infectious smile and hearty laughter, Alva had a unique gift for bringing joy to those around him. He delighted in playfully joking with family and friends, creating cherished memories that will endure in the hearts of those who knew him. He had a love for music, often spending hours listening to his favorite music. He also loved watching old television shows and movies. He was dedicated to supporting his family, especially supporting the endeavors of his beloved grandchildren and great-grand child Heidi. He also took great pride in their home, spending many hours making their yard pretty.

Alva is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Ann Sawtelle, and his children: Paul Anthony Sawtelle, Michael Alan Sawtelle (wife Suzan), Cynthia Sawtelle and daughter in law Raquel Sawtelle. He is also survived by his sister, Jackie Plumb, and her husband Alan. He is also survived by his grandchildren Tannie Davidson (husband Marc Davidson), Cassandra Bomboy (husband Justin Bomboy), Phillip Rincon, Gabriella Woolsey (husband Logan Woolsey), great-grand child Heidi Bomboy and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death are his parents, Archer Gordon Sawtelle and Violet Almira Sawtelle; son David Lyle Sawtelle, brother Lyle Sawtelle, his sister Barbara Gammon and husband Bob Gammon, son-in-law Hector Segura, and many other beloved family members.

Funeral services to honor Alva's life will be held on April 21, 2025, at the First Christian Church, located at 2101 North Main Street in Del Rio, Texas. A viewing will take place at 10 am, followed by a service at 11 am, with graveside rites to follow at Westlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to charities supporting veterans, children, diabetes research, or animal welfare, in memory of Alva's dedication to these causes. Alva Archer Sawtelle will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness, service, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
