Jose Alfonso �"Poncho"� Cortinas

Jose Alfonso �"Poncho"� Cortinas age 81, entered into rest after a 6 month battle with cancer on October 9, 2013. He was born March 14, 1932 to Fidelio and Rafaela Cortinas in Del Rio, Texas.
A veteran of the Korean War, Poncho was drafted into the United States Army during his sophomore year at San Felipe High. After completion of basic and telephone wireman training, he was deployed to South Korea until 1953 when he was sent to Japan. After serving two years in the US Army, he returned to Del Rio and met the love of his life Lucy Pena and married on May 13, 1956, within that union four children were born. Poncho then went on to begin a career with the Texas Highway Department as a technician for twenty years where he was one of three inspectors for highway bridges throughout Texas. Upon retiring for the Highway Department, Poncho and Lucy owned and operated Cortinas Tire Repair for 26 years. Poncho was a well known businessman throughout the area. He belonged to the American GI Forum for 40 years and held the positions of Chairman and Treasurer. He was also a member of the San Felipe Lions Club and one of the founders of the BASS Club.
After his retirement Joe and Lucy began many travels together in their RV their second home up until his illness.
Poncho is preceded in death by his parents Fidelio and Rafaela Cortinas, sister Yolanda and brothers Fidelio Jr. and Fidel Cortinas of El Paso, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lucy and children: Jose A. Cortinas II and wife Velma of Del Rio, Texas, Esther and husband Juan Gallegos of San Antonio, Texas, Cynthia Pruneda and husband Gerry of Del Rio, Texas, Christine Huntley and husband Bill of Hanover Park, Illinois.
Brothers: Ruben Cortinas and wife Leticia of San Bernardino, California, Hiram Cortinas and wife Stephanie of Newark, California, Sister Esther Chavarria and husband Arnoldo of Eagle Pass, Texas and Sister in-law Carmen Cortinas of El Paso, Texas.
Grandchildren: Jennifer Cortinas, Joseph Cortinas III and wife Marian, Erik Jaso, Christan Garcia, Chila Ortiz and husband Concepcion, Chris and Victoria Giron, Selina Andrade Jaramillo and husband Paul, Anita and Ernestino Pruneda; Corina and Emily Huntley.
Great-granchildren: Imani Rose Giron, Kaleb Zapata, Samuel, Abcide, Thalina, Sylvia, Carmen, Benny Ortiz and Camila Andrade Jaramillo.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 11, 2013 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary 7:00pm
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 10:00am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Interment Sunset Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post 595.
